Theoretical Background

Following our previous review which focused on the benefits of music (found here), we have now reviewed the human tendency to share, as the linchpin of the StreetBeat experience (found here).
Roughly 70% of human conversation is usually regarded as "gossip". This tendency has been academically investigated for over 90 years, with recent studies showing that when people speak about themselves, their mesolimbic dopamine pathway starts to activates above normal levels. This part of the brain is associated with the feeling of reward and is the same part that is activated when consuming narcotics such as cocaine. The tendency to share is not limited to the verbal medium as as Facebook shows us, people "share" using photographs and videos as well. Interestingly, the best predictor of college students' satisfaction with Facebook was found to be how much they shared about themselves (in status updates and photo-albums).

In light of this, we propose that the StreetBeat could serve as a new medium for non-verbal and non-directed self-disclosure.
